Implementation of Interactivity and Multimedia-Based Content using Multiple Devices in Adult Education (AE)

The Erasmus+ project Multiple Devices for Multimedia & Interactive Adult Education focused on the development of innovative Multiple Devices for Multimedia Learning approaches in adult education. The project addressed the increasing use of digital devices in training environments, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, Chromebooks, and convertible devices. Its central aim was to improve the capacity of adult education organisations to create, manage, and deliver multimedia-based and interactive learning materials that function effectively across different digital devices and learning environments. The project was planned, structured, applied, and implemented by Peter Mazohl.

Multiple devices and multimedia refers to the use of various digital tools (such as computers, smartphones, and tablets) alongside diverse forms of content (such as text, audio, video, and images) to access, create, and share information across different platforms simultaneously.
The project responded to a growing challenge within technology-enhanced learning: although multimedia and interactive learning materials are increasingly important in adult education, many smaller educational institutions lack the technical knowledge, pedagogical methodologies, and practical competences required to develop and implement high-quality digital learning content. Particular attention was therefore given to accessible and cost-effective solutions using freeware tools, cloud-based collaboration systems, and open digital learning platforms.

The consortium brought together four adult education organisations from different European regions with complementary expertise and target groups. EBI/EIE (Austria) contributed experience in adult education for older adults and rural learning environments. AJITER (Portugal) focused on younger adults and remote island communities. BrainLog (Denmark) contributed expertise related to urban adult education and cooperation with public authorities, while EuphoriaNet (Italy) provided business-oriented adult education experience in an international metropolitan environment.

A major focus of the project was the support of senior learners and the development of methodologies enabling older adults to participate effectively in digital and multimedia-based learning. The project analysed the use of multiple devices in adult education, evaluated multimedia and interactive authoring tools, examined learning management systems and alternative digital platforms, and developed practical examples and pilot implementations for technology-enhanced training.

The project activities also included the establishment of a European community of practice for adult education providers interested in multimedia-based and interactive learning. Networking and dissemination activities were supported through collaborative online environments and the creation of an EPALE-based exchange community.

The main result of the project was the Implementation Guide for Multimedia & Interactive Based Trainings Using Multiple Devices. This comprehensive publication summarised the findings, methodologies, technical recommendations, and pedagogical approaches developed during the project. The materials were published in digital formats including PDF and EPUB, as well as in printed English-language editions and can be downloaded from the project’s web page.

Implemented between November 2020 and May 2023, the project contributed significantly to the advancement of technology-enhanced adult education in Europe by supporting inclusive, multimedia-based, and device-independent learning approaches suitable for diverse adult learner groups and educational contexts.
